Program
Journeyman training classes are available for all
Journeymen who are in good standing with LU 539.
The registration form can be downloaded and faxed
or mailed to the training center in September of
each year, registration forms are not accepted any
other time. Please indicate the classes that you
are interested in. City and State Code classes will
be offered to all Journeymen, but City and State
Tests are limited to those who have the required
experience and can meet specific requirements.

in our training center at Dunwoody Institute. Please

We Do Not Offer Classes In Preparation For Master
competency Cards. All Code Classes are for the preparation
of the Journeyman Comp. Cards only.
Listed on the registration
form are courses and
seminars that may be available. Indicate the classes
you are interested in by numbering them as 1st, 2nd,
3rd, 4th etc. choices. Please sign up only for the
classes that you intend to take. If there is a class
that you are interested in and it is not listed,
write it in the space provided.
You can register by mailing the registration form

form for registration dates and deadlines. (Please
note the early registration dates for the City Oil
Code, OSHA 10, and OSHA 30 classes).
Approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to the start of
each class, you will be notified only if classes
have adequate participation. A minimum of 10 journeymen
is required for the J.A.C. to sponsor the class.
The Cost of Each Class is $25.00*, payable the First
Night of Class by Check or Money Order Only. No Cash
Will Be Accepted.

Journeyman Training Course Descriptions
A minimum of 10 people must be registered for a
class for it to be held.
1. City Low Pressure Steam /Hot Water Code – This class will cover the International Building Code as it relates to Low-Pressure Steam and Hot Water piping and systems.
2. State High Pressure Steam Code – This course will cover the State High Pressure Steam and Ammonia code.
3. City Gas Code - This class will cover the International Building Code as it relates to Gas Systems.
4. City Refrigeration Code - This class will cover the International Building Code as it relates to refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
5. City Oil Code - This class will cover the International Building Code regarding fuel oil.
6. DDC\BAS- This course will cover the main components of a building automation system including set-up, troubleshooting and calibration procedures for I to P transducers, sensors and electronic actuators. Set-up, programming and wiring of VAV/DDC boxes, Central Control Panels and Tracker systems will also be covered. (Class size limited to 12).
7. Burner/Boiler Start-up - This course is designed to teach the basic start up of gas and oil burners. It will cover the proper sizing of burners to the boiler, gas and oil train code requirements, and basic control functions and troubleshooting. (Class size is limited to 12)
8. Refrigeration 1 - This ten-night hands-on course covers the fundamentals of refrigeration and air conditioning and includes the study of basic refrigeration theory, system components and basic control systems.
9. Refrigeration 2- This twelve-night course will cover piping, evacuating and start-up procedures used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
10. Pneumatic Controls - A fourteen-night course on the components of air stations, auxiliary devices such as EP's, PE's, pneumatic switching relays, ratio relays, reversing relays and pneumatic thermostats, calibration and set-up of single and dual input receiver controllers and transmitters. Students will pipe, adjust and calibrate the control components listed above.
11 Foreman Training- This six-night course covers basic blue print skills, creating material lists, projecting manpower needs, people skills and understanding contractor needs.
12. Ammonia- This six-night course will cover an introduction to ammonia, its operation and introduction to compound systems and safety factors.
13. Underground Tank Certification - This class will cover the State Regulations regarding the installation of oil tanks that are installed underground. Upon successful completion of this course the student will be eligible for the Minnesota PCA Underground Tank Certification. Requires a City Journeyman Oil License or completion of the Oil Code Class.
14. CFC Certification – This course will study the current EPA laws regarding the recycling, reclaiming and recovering of high and low pressure refrigerants. (U.A. CFC Certification upon successful completion.)
15. 10 Hr. OSHA Course – 10 hour OSHA safety training (10 hr. OSHA card upon successful completion.)
16. 30 Hr. OSHA Course – 30 hour OSHA safety training (30 hr. OSHA card upon successful completion.) The OSHA 30 hour certification is a two part class, and the completion of the OSHA 10 Course listed above is requires in conjunction with this 20 hour course (OSHA requires that the 30 hours total must be completed within a 6-month period).
17. UA HVACR STAR Certification Review – This course will review for the UA STAR HVACR Technician Certification exam. The exam will be the final night of class and will be proctored by the NITC. The cost of the exam is $120.00.
18. Power Ltd. Technician License Renewal 100 & 200– PLL 100 and PLL 200 are 8 CEUs each (2 nights/4 hours per night). The completion of both the PLL 100 and PLL 200 courses meets the 16 CEUs of continuing education required by the State Board of Electricity for license renewal.
19. UA 50 & 51 Brazing Certification – This is a 9 hour course (3 nights) that will prepare you to take the UA 50 and 51 Brazing Certifications. These certifications meet ASME Section IX, B31.5 Refrigeration, and B31.9 Building Services, Brazing Requirements and Qualifications. The tests consist of (2) joints in each the horizontal and vertical up flow positions, using a BCuP filler metal, purged with nitrogen. The UA 50 test is on ¾” Type L tube and the UA 51 is on is on 1½.” Type L tube, the certification test will be given at the UA test facility in St. Paul. |
